Day 1
Day 1
Arrive in Stockholm and make your way to your centrally located hotel, perfectly positioned to begin your Scandinavian adventure. Depending on your arrival time, you may wish to take an introductory stroll through the nearby streets, where elegant architecture, waterfront views and cosy cafés quickly reveal why Stockholm is often called one of Europe’s most beautiful capitals.

Built across fourteen islands connected by bridges, the city blends historic charm with modern Scandinavian design. Wander through the cobbled lanes of Gamla Stan (Old Town), enjoy dinner by the water, or simply relax after your journey and soak up the atmosphere of Sweden’s capital.

You have 2 wonderful days to see as much as possible of Stockholm. Tomorrow on your third day your journey continues west into Sweden’s lake and forest landscapes as your fly-drive adventure begins.

Day 3
Day 3
Leave Stockholm behind this morning and begin your scenic journey west toward Karlstad, travelling through the historic region of Bergslagen, an area known for forests, lakes and Sweden’s early industrial heritage.

A pleasant first stop can be along the shores of Lake Mälaren, where small cafés and viewpoints offer the perfect place for a relaxed coffee break before continuing your drive through the Swedish countryside.

By late morning, consider visiting Ängelsbergs Bruk, one of Sweden’s best-preserved ironworks and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The beautifully maintained buildings and lakeside setting offer a fascinating glimpse into Sweden’s industrial past, all within a peaceful rural environment.

For lunch, traditional Swedish cooking can be enjoyed at Fellingsbro Gästgiveri, a classic countryside inn, or in the charming town of Arboga, where cafés and restaurants line cobbled streets dating back to medieval times.

In the afternoon, those with extra time may wish to detour through the forested hills of Kilsbergen, sometimes called the “Blue Mountains”, where viewpoints provide sweeping panoramas across lakes and woodland. Alternatively, spend time exploring Örebro, home to an impressive castle, pleasant river walks, and lively cafés.

As you approach Karlstad in the late afternoon, keep an eye out for local gårdsbutiker (farm shops), ideal for picking up regional cheeses, baked goods, or other local produce before arriving in the lakeside city.

The direct drive takes around three hours, but with scenic stops and leisurely breaks, today easily becomes a relaxed full-day journey of discovery through central Sweden.

Enjoy your drive through one of Sweden’s most authentic and beautiful regions.

Spend time wandering along Smögen’s famous wooden boardwalk, lined with colourful boathouses, boutiques and waterfront cafés. It’s the perfect place to enjoy fresh seafood, watch fishing boats come and go, or simply relax with views across the harbour.

Those wishing to explore further can easily visit nearby fishing villages such as Kungshamn, Hunnebostrand, or Fjällbacka, each offering charming harbours, swimming spots and small shops selling local crafts and delicacies. Boat excursions are also available, allowing you to explore the nearby islands and rocky coastline from the water.

For active travellers, the smooth granite rocks along the coast provide wonderful walking routes and natural swimming areas, while kayaking, cycling and coastal hikes offer great ways to enjoy the fresh sea air.

Alternatively, simply enjoy the facilities at Smögens Hafvsbad Hotel, known for its seaside spa atmosphere, making it an excellent place to relax and unwind during your stay.

Leaving the west coast behind, today’s journey takes you inland toward the forests and lake districts of central Sweden. A recommended stop en route is Trollhättan, famous for its impressive waterfalls and canal locks, where you can watch boats navigate this remarkable waterway connecting inland Sweden with the sea.

Continuing inland along parts of Lake Vänern, the scenery gradually becomes more rural as forests and lakes dominate the landscape. Before reaching your accommodation, you may wish to stop near Filipstad, close to the birthplace of Swedish engineer John Ericsson, inventor of the ironclad warship USS Monitor, which played a crucial role in the American Civil War. Small local displays and information points in the region highlight his life and achievements, making this an interesting cultural stop, particularly for American visitors.

By late afternoon, arrive at Hennickehammars Herrgård, a beautiful former mine-owner’s manor house set beside a peaceful lake and surrounded by forest. Enjoy the tranquil setting with a lakeside walk or relax before dinner in this historic and atmospheric retreat.
